Jo Thomas

Position: Senior Teacher / Coach / Mentor / Staff Development

Occupation:   I work at as a Teaching Assistant with interests in Special Educational Needs and Information Technology

History: I came to know Tom Gresty through our children as they attended the same local primary school. I supported him as he set up the swim school. Initially offering poolside assistance and administrative duties. This led to me assisting classes in the water and from there circumstances arose that gave me the opportunity to take my Assistant Teachers qualification. I then worked as a teacher for Tom and had the chance to observe, and work with other teachers learning from them.

Wanting to learn more I enrolled on a Full Teacher/Coaching course. In August 2003 Hemesh and I set off for a 10 day intensive training course at the famous Millfields School. After a nervous wait the results arrived. I had passed and was fully qualified.

I enjoy using the multi-stroke teaching that is the norm at the Tom Gresty Swim School allowing the children to gain confidence naturally and to enable them to learn a skill which has the potential to save their life. I believe that swimming is an ideal platform for any sport that the young person may choose to participate in. It also opens up the opportunity to sail, surf, canoe and scuba dive in fact any water sport which requires a degree of competence in the water. To this end it is important to me to keep the learning varied and fun.

I am now in the position where I am acting as mentor to members of the team who have taken and passed the first step in their teaching careers. It gives me a great sense of pride to see the young people who started with us as swimmers developing through helpers, lifeguards, to swimming teachers.

Interests:Walking (when time allows), Studying with the Open University and 24.

Favourite stroke: Depends if I am swimming it or teaching it!!
